String portrait of Galesburg

Create a textile self-portrait with Studios Midwest artist Marina Gasparini. This workshop is in two days. Day one will take place June 29th from 11am – 1pm and June 30th from 1pm – 3pm. The workshop is free and open to the public. All details are below.

Ms. Gasparini is one of three artists participating in the 2013 Studios Midwest residency. She will be working on her art in Galesburg through mid-July. During her residency, she will be creating a textile portrait of the city and her artistic portrait of Galesburg needs the help from its inhabitants. 
The Galesburg Civic Art Center will host a workshop, taught by Ms. Gasparini, so that Galesburg residents can be represented in the final installation. There will be two workshops offered – both will split the workshop sessions over two days. During the first session of the workshop, participants will be asked to create a textile self-portrait or word that answers a question posed by Ms. Gasparini. The second day of the workshop is required to complete the textile process. The first workshop sessions will take place on Saturday, June 29th at 11am and Sunday, June 30th at 1pm. The second workshop sessions will take place on Monday, July 1st at 6pm and Tuesday, July 2nd at 6pm. All workshop sessions will take place in the Blick Gallery at the Galesburg Civic Art Center. These workshops are free and open to the public. Pre-registration is not necessary, but would be appreciated. The final installation will be available for viewing on Tuesday, July 9th from 6-8pm in suite 102 at the Bondi Building located at 311 East Main St. in downtown Galesburg.

Studios Midwest is a summer residency program conducted by the Galesburg Civic Art Center. The program brings artists to Galesburg, IL to engage and impact the community through collaborative art. The program assists each artist in creating an environment ripe for the emerging trend of art and social practice. Distinct from modern art of the 20th century, social practice builds on a variety of contemporary art movements while incorporation elements of sociology, anthropology,environmentalism, and community outreach. In simple terms, the artist(s) will interact with the local population to create a lasting work of art in the community.
