DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
The project started in my residence in Finland, last year. It is about the interaction between the individuals and the Art & Culture organizations: the contemporary Art and its role in the life of those people who neither do belong to, nor have got their ‘citizenship’ recognized inside the so-called ‘art-system’. How can these people cross the invisible threshold that marks the dividing line between those signs with an ‘artistic’ status and the merely ‘creative’ ones which are often labelled as amateurish?
The interface between these two spheres: the ‘extraordinary/artistic’ and the ‘mundane/everyday’ one, is represented by – quoting Lotman – a ‘membrane’ that facilitates the exchange of experiences and roles. The project will unfold in a series of workshops to offer a chance for a proactive participation to the making of ‘Art’ to those people who usually look at it passively while visiting its sanctuaries (Museums and Art galleries).
The project workshops will be organized in two parts: the first will take place in both the institutional Art spaces and in the customary everyday life sceneries. The participants will be asked to draw with permanent felt pens on transparent surfaces, made of either wooden-framed glass or plastic, reproducing, urban landscapes and interiors of buildings in their city they visited or lived in.
During the second part of the workshop the drawings will become the matrix on which locally crafted cords and threads will be laid following the tracks on the transparent surfaces. When they dry, after a special treatment, they will give to the signs a tactile texture. The last part of the process will require a sort of tailor’s approach to assemble the cords, removed from the matrixes, sewing them to fix the contours.
At the end of this process we will obtain some multi-dimensional drawings, which will be gathered to form a larger installation. These panels or tapestry with their own formal identity will contribute to a common picture, a project connected by the inner essence of the material: the thread, which in its disentangling connects the life experiences of different individuals, marking the osmosis between everyday life and artistic practice.
My artistic research which has been based on my private life so far, with this project my work opens up to a broader collective dimension, somehow inspired by the recent social changing in your country. The thread and the fabric still represent to me the more meaningful metaphor for the human beings social networking.

Se l’Arte ed il suo vettore nella sfera umana, l’artisticita’, il talento, sono fenomeni esclusivi, peculiarita’ attribuite a colui/lei che viene riconosciuto ‘artista’. le suggestioni, gli stimoli, l’ambiente, il tessuto sociale che li alimentano, sono patrimonio della comunita’ che circonda, in cui vive, l’ “artista”.
Come tessere di un mosaico di esperienza umane, legate indissolubilmente all’ambiente, al tessuto sociale ed ai rapporti tra le persone – i cittadini – che ne sono gli attori, questo progetto ruota intorno al ruolo dell’arte contemporanea nella vita delle persone. Il ‘contemporaneo’ nell’ Arte offre un punto d’osservazione privilegiato rispetto alla realta’, al quotidiano, come uno stacco che consenta di cogliere degli aspetti di cio’ che stiamo vivendo che altrimenti andrebbero perduti.
E’ a questo esercizio del potere democratico ed al suo potenziale creativo che si ispira il progetto che vorrei realizzare. Esso riguarda l’interazione tra gli individui e le organizzazioni artistiche e culturali; l’arte contemporanea e il suo ruolo nella vita delle persone che all’interno del cosiddetto “sistema dell’arte” non hanno lo status di addetti ai lavori o di piena “cittadinanza”. Come possono questi soggetti varcare l’invisibile soglia che divide la produzione dei segni artistici da quelli semplicemente “creativi” ma spesso relegati al campo ristretto delle attività quotidiane o “amatoriali”?
La distanza e l’appartenenza tra queste due sfere, nel mio progetto sono rappresentate da una superficie trasparente, una “membrana”, (come direbbe Lotman), attraverso la quale l’ambito artistico e quello quotidiano possono effettuare i loro scambi. Il progetto si articolera’ in una serie laboratori – workshops – che inviteranno a partecipare quelle persone che normalmente frequentano i luoghi consacrati all’arte come semplici osservatori.
I ‘workshops’ saranno organizzati in due fasi, la prima delle quali si svolgerà sia all’interno di musei e gallerie sia all’esterno di esse, negli scenari quotidiani delle attività lavorative e private. I partecipanti saranno invitati ad utilizzare superfici di vetro (inserite su telai di legno) o plastiche trasparenti e pennarelli, per disegnare delle vedute dei luoghi naturali, delle architetture e degli interni, sia domestici che museali, della loro città.
Nella seconda fase del ‘workshop’, i disegni così ottenuti, diventeranno delle matrici sulle quali saranno adagiati corde e filati, prodotti artigianali del luogo, che seguendo la traccia sul vetro, conferiranno ai segni una plasticita’ di disegni solidi ma che conservano l’essenza e la tattilità del filato Per ottenere questo risultato i fili dovranno essere opportunamente trattati con speciali sostanze e lasciati seccare sulla matrice traslucida ed, in una fase più artigianale e sartoriale del lavoro, i fili stessi saranno stati separati dalla matrice e assemblati con ago e filo.
Si otterranno cosi’ dei disegni a piu’ dimensioni, degli oggetti plastici, che saranno connessi tra loro in una grande installazione. Pannelli o arazzi, con una propria identita’ formale che contribuiranno ad una immagine – progetto – comune letteralmente collegato dall’essenza stessa del materiale impiegato, il filo, che dipanandosi lega l’esperienza dei singoli individui, questo a testimoniare il passaggio dalla pratica quotidiana a quella artistica, e viceversa.
Questo progetto rappresenta un ampliamento per la mia ricerca artistica. Fino ad oggi essa si e’ basata sul mio quotidiano e sul privato Il filo e il tessuto restano sempre, per me, la metafora più efficace della interazione tra individui, del ‘network’ sociale all’interno del consesso umano.
